The keyboard modifiers

In the September 18 demo discussion, Eastshade Studios answers a player who wants to sell some items without selling a whole stack. The accepted reply identifies two modifiers:

GoalDeveloper-listed modifier
Split the stackShift
Take one itemCtrl

Use the modifier as you select the stack and observe the resulting quantity. The reply names the modifiers but does not provide a full controller sequence or a detailed drag animation, so follow the interaction shown in your current interface.

A safer way to sell only the excess

Our suggested workflow is to decide how many items you must keep, separate the excess in inventory, and inspect both quantities before moving anything to the well. This makes the intended selling amount visible before you commit it.

Start with an ordinary spare item if you are unfamiliar with the controls. Avoid your only quest material for the first attempt. This advice reduces the cost of an input mistake; it is not evidence that the game has a universal undo button.

When the modifier seems ineffective

Check that you are interacting with a stack containing more than one item. Then confirm the game is receiving keyboard-and-mouse input rather than showing prompts for another device. Read any quantity dialog before continuing.

Those are troubleshooting checks, not additional controls confirmed by the source. If the result differs, record which modifier you used and what the interface did, instead of repeating the same move into the selling target.

Controller scope

The accepted answer does not identify a controller equivalent. No button is guessed here. Use the current on-screen quantity controls if offered, or consult the active control mapping.

For keeping materials instead of selling them, storage chests solve a different problem. The well guide explains the selling destination once your stack is prepared.
